Nato sessant'anni fa a Willis Point, in Texas, una piccola cittadina a 30 miglia a est di Dallas, LaFave è cresciuto con la famiglia a Stillwater in Oklahoma, dove ha incominciato a muovere i primi passi nella musica. Nonostante si sia trasferito nuovamente in Texas, a Austin, ormai trent'anni fa, viene ancora considerato un cantautore dell'Oklahoma, tra i massimi esponenti della Red Dirt Music. Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Springsteen, Jackson Browne, il Texas e l'Oklahoma, scorrono nelle vene e nelle ballate di Jimmy LaFave. In perfetta sintonia con il titolo, questo album contiene canzoni nate rigorosamente dopo il tramonto, guidando nell'oscurità e indagando le mille sfumature dell'animo umano come la dolcissima e folkeggiante Beauty of you, la romantica Talk to an angel, e lo spumeggiante country-rock da camera della magnifica Maybe. Strepitose anche le due cover del disco: l'immancabile omaggio a Bob Dylan con un'incalzante Queen Jane approximately e la splendida rilettura per organo e slide di Journey through the past di Neil Young.
