I tulipani, quando un virus li faceva belli, screziati, ma anche malati! E sì, tulipani monocolori si screziavano di rosso, giallo, viola ecc.: belli a guardare ma purtroppo infettati da un virus, chiamato TBV, trasmesso da un afide, che, agendo sui geni delle piante predisposti alla sintesi dei pigmenti, produceva questa straordinaria mutazione che screziava i petali con degli spruzzi e machie multicolori; ma ahimè trasformando anche le piante in bellezze malate. Oggi per fortuna l'attacco del virus è stato scongiurato grazie al sapiente lavoro di bravi giardinieri. Abbiamo pur sempre dei bellissimi tulipani screziati, non più malati, ma frutto di un geniale lovoro di ibridazioni, che ci deliziano di colore.
