Almost could have been taken from a plane, of ornamental gardens - an effective and unusual shot, Ann. |

This floor is part of a Roman town house built in the fourth century that can be seen in Dorchester, Dorset. It is partially protected from the elements by glass screening (making it difficult to photograph) and a roof but moisture is still able to get in and there seems to be a problem with algae. |

Thanks, Tim! I see what you mean. This is, in fact, just a small section of it. There was just a small gap between the glass screens where I could get a clear shot but little choice regarding positioning. |

When I was in the Dorchester Museum (and later posted that shot of a different Roman floor in the Victorian Room) I read about a number of Roman remains and mosaics around the town, but didn't actually see any (of the others). Whereabouts is this one? |

There's information about it here: www.dorsetforyou.com/roman-town-house only a few minutes walk from the town centre. It's free to visit and unmanned. You need some imagination to fill in the gaps in the mosaics...... |

The (slow) bus that I took from Salisbury has now been withdrawn completely due to council cuts and so I cannot get back to Dorchester, except at a silly price by train. But I'm glad I made it that once. Thanks for the info, I'll bear it in mind if I ever do return. |

That's a shame but, as you say, good that you got to go while you still could. As it happens, I nearly went by train, as the price of petrol and together with that of parking would have been much the same but, of course, I live a lot nearer than you do! |

Thanks, Ardian. It's a bit deceptive. Obviously I was above it but very much to the side, trying to negotiate a decent viewpoint between screening panes of glass. Ann :)) |
