Nonostante sia l'ottica più economica di casa Canon, trovo che l'EF 50mm f/1.8 sia una di quelle con rapporto qualità/prezzo più elevato; per una cifra modica, circa 100€, si ha infatti a disposizione un'ottica fissa luminosa con un'ottima nitidezza, soprattutto a partire da f/2; a f/1.8 infatti si ha una notevole perdita di nitidezza, anche se trovo che nonostante questo possa essere usato a tutta apertura in alcune occasioni per ottenere risultati particolari, ovviamente sapendo quali sono i pregi e i problemi di questa scelta, come nel caso di un altro ritratto presente nel portfolio, Anna.
In questo caso il soggetto è la mia amica Laura, e al tempo non avevo ancora il 50mm, ma era quello del mio amico Andrea Pasini, che me l'aveva prestato per provarlo e per capire se fosse così bello come dicevano. Quando ho visto Laura leggere in tutta tranquillità sul lettino ho realizzato che si sarebbe potuto fare un buono scatto, soprattutto perché a Laura piace molto leggere e in questo modo l'avrei immortalata combinando il suo ritratto con una delle sue passioni. Ho scelto di scattare ad f/2 per guadagnare nitidezza e mantenere comunque uno sfondo parecchio sfocato. Trovo che proprio quest'ultimo sia un punto di forza dello scatto: con la sua sfocatura accentuata sembra quasi generare un vortice circolare che cattura Laura immersa nella lettura, proiettandola nel mondo fantastico che sta vivendo leggendo le pagine del suo libro.
