L'albanella minore è un rapace di medie dimensioni (lunghezza di circa 43 cm), con caratteristiche tipiche del genere di appartenenza Circus. È però più snello con coda sporgente e ali lunghe, strette e appuntite (tanto che sono visibili 4 "dita") Il volo è leggero, aggraziato e assai agile spesso radente al suolo e caratterizzato da serie di 5-6 battiti alternati a planate. Si posa a terra e sui cespugli, mostra costumi gregari. Il maschio adulto presenta una colorazione grigio scura con la "mano" nera così come la linea trasversale che attraversa il "braccio". Il grigio più scuro del corpo e delle copritrici contrasta con il grigio più chiaro delle copritrici primarie e delle secondarie. Il grigio della gola e del petto sfuma nel bianco striato di rossiccio del ventre e dei fianchi. Il sottoala presenta un'estesa macchia nera sulla punta delle ali, due barre nere sulle secondarie e le copritrici bianche densamente macchiate di rossiccio. Si ciba di prede varie, tra cui rettili, anfibi, piccoli uccelli e micromammiferi e insetti.
