Collocato sulla vetta piramidale naturale del Monte San Casto che domina la città, il Castello è posizionato a 500 metri di altezza ed è facilmente raggiungibile da vari percorsi pedestri partendo dal centro storico di “Canceglie”, quartiere antico della Città, oppure salendo da piazza Santa Restituta. Dell'antico castello dei Volsci, situato in posizione strategica,facilmente difendibile e difficilmente attaccabile, quasi al confine tra la Marsica ed il Lazio, si conservano le massicce mura perimetrali ed alcuni torrioni romani e medievali oltre a molti ruderi accatastati dopo la Rivoluzione Napoletana del 1799. Dapprima dominio volsco, poi romano, longobardo, papale, borbonico, durante il periodo ducale vide le schiere armate dei Cantelmi, dei Della Rovere e dei Boncompagni contro i conquistatori stranieri.
