Nel '500, Verona era chiamata dai visitatori urbs picta, ossia città dipinta, tanti erano i palazzi cittadini abbelliti da facciate affrescate con colori sgargianti. Infatti a quell'epoca era comune che le case fossero decorate con affreschi, ma a Verona quest'abitudine era talmente diffusa da conquistare il già citato soprannome. Le Case Mazzanti sono il più grande esempio di quella che fu una delle peculiarità della Verona del passato. Osservando le Case Mazzanti e i resti di superficie affrescata su molti altri edifici di Piazza delle Erbe, si può immaginare la meraviglia che coglieva chi entrava nella piazza nel XVI secolo. Le case Mazzanti conservano ancora in un buono stato di conservazione i meravigliosi affreschi realizzati da Alberto Cavalli, che fu allievo di Giulio Romano e collaborò con lui alla realizzazione di Palazzo Te a Mantova. Si possono ritrovare molte delle caratteristiche stilistiche di Giulio Romano nei volumi dei corpi, nell'uso del colore, nell'impostazione della composizione. Gli affreschi raffigurano scene mitologiche e allegoriche.

La statua sulla fontana sembra girarsi ad osservare quegli affreschi...Sorriso
Molto efficace il pdr con buoni colori pur in presenza di luce dura e scarsa, mi sembra infine (ma potrei sbagliarmi), di notare una lieve inclinazione degli allineamenti orizzontali verso sinistra.
