Poco oltre i 2.000 metri, in un versante difficile da raggiungere (come se il vulcano volesse gelosamente conservarla da sguardi indiscreti), si trova questo vero gioiello dell'Etna, una vecchia galleria di scorrimento lavico che ha dato origine a questa meravigliosa grotta. L'eruzione che ha coinvolto questo versante iniziò nel Luglio 1614 e durò per ben 10 anni. La bellezza dello scenario che si osserva lungo il cammino è commovente: lave cordate a perdita d'occhio, testimonianza di una eruzione desueta per l'Etna, contraddistinta da un magma molto fluido, come quello che si vede alle Hawaii. Può essere definito come il 'ghiacciaio' più meridionale d'Europa, infatti anche nei periodi più caldi al suo interno la temperatura non sale mai sopra i -6 °C.
