LA STORIA La maggior parte del sedimento che costituisce la base delle saline di Sicciole e frutto dell'apporto del fiume Dragogna, che si e scavato il suo ampio letto lungo la linea di contatto tra le falde marnoso arenacee (flysch) dei colli Savrini, che si ergono a settentrione della valle, e il calcare del Cretaceo della penisola di Salvare a meridione. Nella parte inferiore si susseguono strati di argilla sabbiosa e di tassello, mentre lo strato superiore e composto da sedimenti fluviali e da fango marino. Si denotano singole modifiche del sedimento (conchiglie e chiocciole) e ammassi scuri di sostanze organiche (foglie, tronchi, radici), dal che si desume che la foce del Dragogna fu saltuariamente paludosa per brevi periodi. I resti fossili del fango marino indicano che nel vallone di Spicciole l'ambiente marino si sostitui per diverse volte a quello brachiale. Con l'apporto dei sedimenti fluviali il fondo marino subi una costante elevazione, formando le condizioni per la regolazione dei campi saliferi.
