La primigenia attività vulcanica che ha dato origine all'Etna (nel corso dei millenni), si concentrò all'interno del golfo pre-etneo che si estendeva dai Peloritani agli Iblei, un'area larga circa 40 chilometri, nel punto di contatto tra la zolla Euroasiatica (a Nord) e quella Africana (a Sud). Fu proprio l'attrito tra le due zolle a dare origine alle prime eruzioni sottomarine, costituite da lave basaltiche molto fluide che colmarono il fondo e i margini del golfo che esisteva prima della formazione dell'Etna. Numerose di queste eruzioni hanno fatto affiorare interi blocchi di magma formando dei piccoli edifici basaltici ben visibili ancora ai nostri giorni e che costituiscono ad esempio i famosi Faraglioni di Aci Trezza.
