I've placed an order for the latest Sigma Contemporary 17-70mm f2.8-4 macro lens. This image was taken by its predecessor, which I owned for a few months a couple of years ago. At the time it was my only standard DX zoom and it didn't quite have the performance wide open needed for my live music shooting, so I sold it and bought both the Nikkor 16-85mm VR, which is excellent but slow and impossible to use at night, even with a tripod, as the viewfinder is so dark and manual focus is horrible. I also bought a small, light and plasticky Tamron SP 17-50mm f2.8, which I didn't like using but had superb performance and so was replaced later by a much better built old Tokina 16-50mm f2.8 Pro, which provided the professional sharpness at wide apertures but also excellent to use at night. However, it doesn't mate well with my travelling kit of 70-300mm Tamron SP VC, with a gap between 50-70mm and it didn't have any stabilisation, so not good for a walkabout lens at either sunrise or sunset. The new Sigma is a complete redesign over the old lens, with improved performance all round and better to use than the old one. It also has the very effective Sigma OS, HSM (fast, silent) focussing and where the Nikkor 16-85mm really lacks, a decent close up feature capturing say spring flowers at 1:3 rd life size. The price new of the Sigma is also very reasonable, allowing me to keep both other lenses, for their own particular optical qualities. |

This is a really beautiful image, Tim, with those streaks of light along the railings and the gorgeous stillness of the water. Love the starburst of light peeping through, too! Thanks for the really informative lens write up! Exciting to be getting a new lens! :) |

Thank you Ann. This image was originally my 200th Blip, so a while before you joined. I should take it again in exactly the same place with the new lens, when it comes. It could take a while... |
