Le Pale di San Martino (dette anche Dolomiti di Primiero e Gruppo delle Pale) sono il più esteso gruppo delle Dolomiti, con circa 240 km² di estensione, situate in maggior parte in provincia di Belluno ed in parte nel Trentino orientale. Si estendono nella zona compresa tra il Primiero (valli del Cismon, del Canali e del Travignolo), la Valle del Biois (Falcade) e l'Agordino. Le Pale sono costituite da dolomia, roccia sedimentaria formata da doppio carbonato di calcio e magnesio, scoperta dal marchese Déodat de Dolomieu nel 1788. L'altopiano delle Pale, situato nel settore centrale del gruppo, si estende per uno spazio di circa 50 km² e costituisce un enorme tavolato vuoto, roccioso e quasi lunare che oscilla tra i 2500 e i 2800 m s.l.m. Secondo alcune fonti esso avrebbe ispirato lo scrittore bellunese Dino Buzzati (grande amante delle vette della catena) nell'ambientazione del suo romanzo Il Deserto dei Tartari. La parte delle Pale che si estende in Trentino è interamente compresa nel Parco naturale Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino.
