Questo enorme pollo sultano espanso, inatto al volo, è il takahe. Scoperto dai primi coloni perchè ucciso per essere mangiato, se ne conoscevano solo 4 esemplari catturati per scopo alimentare, a distanza di 20-30 anni l'uno dall'altro. Ritenuto estinto, dopo lunghe ricerche ne è stata riscoperta una piccola popolazione nel 1948 nelle vallate interne dell'isola meridionale; al momento ne sopravvivono solo 275 esemplari, alcuni ospitati presso santuari e piccole isole che sono state liberate dai predatori terrestri.
