Many compliments on the whole gallery! Very beautiful pictures, sharp and as always a pleasure to watch. Are those red-tailed hawks a common species in your area? Beautiful raptor. I've only seen them as a falconers bird (but I prefer birds to live in freedom). The common buzzards that live here in the Netherlands are a bit smaller, but quite similar to their relatives in North America and Canada. Their behavior in fact, as I have read, seems to be different. The Red-Tail seems to be a more agressive hunter that is capable of catching much bigger prey than the rather "timid" Common Buzzard. They hunt mainly for small prey as mice and rodents. Sometimes they can be seen searching the ground for insects and worms! Goodluck with your photography and kind greetings, Hans |

Hans, thank for the nice compliment and the extensive comparison of the hawk species. Yes, the Red tail Hawk is a very common bird in our area. We live in a large very fertile valley with extensive farming. The birds perch on utility poles and light poles just waiting for mice, voles, snakes, etc. to emerge in the open fields. They do look a lot like what you call "Common Buzzards. Good to hear from you. Thanks for taking the time to write. Wally |
