Speleomantes ambrosii è un geotritone, ovvero un anfibio appartenente al genere Speleomantes della famiglia Plethodontidae. I Pletodontidi sono privi di polmoni e la respirazione avviene attraverso la pelle e tramite le superfici della cavità boccale. Speleomantes ambrosii è specie endemica dell'Italia ed ha un areale ristrettissimo che comprende solo parte della provincia di La Spezia e parte della provincia di Massa e Carrara. Sono strettamente legati ad ambienti umidi a causa della respirazione cutanea, pur non vivendo in corrispondenza di specchi d'acqua, dai quali sono indipendenti grazie alla viviparità (partoriscono piccoli già formati, non depongono uova). D'inverno è molto difficile trovarli, poiché vivono nel terreno umido, quasi sempre sotterrati. D'estate vivono all'interno delle grotte, dove le temperature sono più basse e l'umidità più alta. Questa foto è stata scattata in una grotta abbastanza grande, nella provincia di La Spezia, durante una campagna naturalistica guidata da due professori dell'Università degli Studi di Milano. Lo scatto è stato fatto abbastanza di fretta, poiché il lavoro degli studenti presenti era quello di prendere parametri ambientali e altre misure tra le quali la lunghezza degli esemplari. Ho utilizzato il flash esterno, attaccato alla macchina, di rimbalzo sulla parete e, per la messa a fuoco, mi sono fatto aiutare da un mio compagno che ha illuminato l'animale con una torcia poiché, superata una certa profondità, la luce all'interno della grotta è pari a zero! In post produzione ho schiarito le ombre sulla testa.
