Viene costruito su preesistenze medievali nei primi anni del Cinquecento per volontà di Lorenzo Cattaneo, ricco commerciante e imprenditore che nello stesso periodo fa sistemare la villa di Terralba (oggi villa Imperiale) per accogliervi Luigi XII re di Francia. La traccia più evidente giunta fino a noi di questo intervento è costituito dal portale d'accesso al palazzo realizzato da Antonio della Porta nel 1504. È stata invece completamente distrutta durante la seconda guerra mondiale la loggia collocata a livello del piano nobile tra vico del Fumo e vico San Giorgio, molto simile alla loggia ancora esistente della villa di Terralba. Questo angoletto del centro storico genovese e' davvero una chicca...le scritte moderne sui muri e sul portone rinascimentale sono un tratto d' unione tra antico e moderno, che caratterizzano tutto il centro storico, qui tra l'altro in una zona non troppo sicura all' imbrunire...
