Avrei sottoesposto e recuperato dalle ombre.

I underexposed and recovered from the shadows. Whites a bit 'too burned and roost not just the best ;-)

G

Your Luke observations are right, in this picture there is a heavy exposure in terms of the manger and a "roost" aesthetically poor.
The lighting situation, as you know that it was anything but favorable.
In other shots of the same session I adopted the technique recommended by you, underexpose the subject and recovering post, but I'm not a lover of editing too pushed and I'm not too skilled in doing so, for me, photography has to leave the SLR ( will be 'one of my legacy of the film limit ....).
Also catching the shadows, I noticed a significant loss of detail on the subject.
I inserted the click (which I still love) in the comments section, despite the above flaws, just to assess any advice on how to act in strong backlight situationslike this, so thank you for your visit and for the welcome step.

A greeting
