L'attuale sede dell'Accademia delle Scienze fu concepita nel 1678 per ospitare un Collegio per i giovani rampolli delle famiglie aristocratiche (da qui il nome originario di Collegio dei Nobili) con una chiesa e una casa per i professi. La paternità dell'edificio è generalmente attribuita al Guarini; tuttavia fin dalla posa della prima pietra (1679), la direzione dei lavori fu affidata probabilmente a Michelangelo Garove, che apportò modifiche al progetto originario. La facciata non è oggi completamente apprezzabile nel suo insieme a causa della strettezza di Via Accademia delle Scienze e dell'altezza dell'edificio; di scorcio si possono leggere però i motivi ornamentali che la vivacizzano e che le donano quella vivacità e vitalità che il disciplinato ritmo delle finestre sembrerebbe invece negargli. L'edificio divenne sede delle collezioni egizie sin dal 1824.
