In Piazza San Carlo, al centro, si erge il monumento equestre ad Emanuele Filiberto, opera di Carlo Marochetti del 1838, detta Caval ed Bronz che raffigura il duca nell'atto di ringuainare la spada dopo la vittoria di San Quintino. In occasione delle XX Olimpiadi Invernali, la piazza è stata oggetto di un'importante riqualificazione. L'amministrazione comunale ha optato per una pedonalizzazione totale della piazza, eliminando il flusso di traffico e il parcheggio a pettine lungo i lati lunghi, pavimentandola con un pavé di porfido. Contestualmente alla realizzazione di un parcheggio sotterraneo (che va ad unirsi al vasto sistema sotterraneo di Via Roma), sono stati rinvenuti dei reperti di epoca romana e i resti di un ponte risalente all'epoca di Emanuele Filiberto.In questa piazza, il 21 settembre 1864, si verificò uno degli eventi più tragici della storia di Torino, che in quei giorni aveva subìto la clausola (richiesta dalla Francia) del trasferimento della capitale d'Italia a Firenze. I torinesi scesero pacificamente in piazza per protestare contro la decisione del governo Minghetti, ma le forze pubbliche furono esageratamente spietate nel reprimere la protesta: secondo alcune fonti, rimasero a terra 184 persone. Il 24 settembre Minghetti fu costretto alle dimissioni, ma la scelta di abbandonare la città era ormai presa e, nel 1865, Torino rinunciava obtorto collo al ruolo di capitale del Regno. In piazza San Carlo era presente uno dei molti rifugi antiaerei della città durante la seconda guerra mondiale.
