Sympetrum fonscolombii (Sélys, 1840) Dimensioni: lunghezza: 33-40 mm, apertura alare 60-70 mm. Descrizione della specie: una tra le specie più grandi di Sympetrum. Le nervature delle ali sono rosse, nei maschi maturi, e gialle negli immaturi e nelle femmine. Alla base delle ali posteriori è presente una macchia gialla-arancione più estesa rispetto alla congenere S. sanguineum ma meno di S. flaveolum. Il pterostigma è chiaro (giallo-marrone) orlato di nero, le zampe sono nere con striature gialle e gli occhi, caratteristici, con porzione inferiore grigio-azzurra. Nel maschio adulto la fronte è rossastra e l'addome rosso-mattone mentre gli individui immaturi e le femmine sono di color giallo-marrone. Queste ultime possono essere confuse con le femmine degli altri Sympetrum, in particolare S. flaveolum, ma la colorazione degli occhi e la forma della lamina vulvare, con larga incisione ad U, ne permettono il riconoscimento. Le larve si sviluppano in acque stagnanti, sia dolci che salmastre, spesso poco profonde e povere di vegetazione quali stagni, anche di recente formazione, cave allagate e lagune costiere Distribuzione e habitat: La specie è segnalata di tutte le regioni italiane, si rinviene fino a circa 1300 metri di altitudine. Periodo di attività: Può presentare due generazioni all'anno e pertanto compare dalla fine di marzo a novembre.
