La storica rivalità con la città di Pisa per il predominio del Mediterraneo sfociò, nel 1284, nella battaglia navale della Meloria, durante la quale i genovesi, sotto la guida di Oberto Doria, Benedetto Zaccaria ed Oberto Spinola, inflissero ai nemici una bruciante sconfitta. I genovesi se ne tornarono a casa baldanzosi e trionfanti, portandosi via la catena del porto di Pisa come trofeo e l'appesero sulle Mura di Porta Soprana come simbolo visibile della loro vittoria, arrivarono persino a scioglierne le maglie per esporne gli anelli sui palazzi e sulle chiese più importanti della città. Oltre a ciò, fecero di più: oltre novemila prigionieri tra i pisani, deportati e rinchiusi qui, in questa zona, in questa piazza.
