Per questa ( come per molte altre specie ) non c'è uniformità di vedute fra i tassonomisti. Per molti ritenuta sottospecie di Lycaena hippothoe, è in effetti leggermente diversa sia da questa ( che vola nel settore orientale delle Alpi ) che dalla Lycaena eurydame ( che vola sulle Alpi centro occidentali). Endemismo italiano vola sugli Appennini oltre i 1300 metri, per tutto il mese di giugno, anticipando la Lycaena virgaurae, alla quale il maschio, ad ali aperte assomiglia. Presenta notevole dimorfismo sessuale, ed il maschio di questa specie, ha forse il color rosso più bello fra tutte le appartenenti al genere Lycaena che volano in Italia
