Nymphalis antiopa (Linnaeus, 1758) è una delle più grandi , belle e introvabili farfalle italiane. La specie ha un'enorme distribuzione,presente praticamente in quasi tutto il Paleartico Occidentale, e parte del Neoartico, ma nel nostro paese, è localmente frequente solo in poche località del nord, mentre in centro sud è estremamente difficile un suo incontro. E' una specie monovoltina, che sfarfalla dalla fine di Giugno a tutto Luglio e sverna fino alla primavera successiva, per accoppiarsi e deporre le uova sui salici e, in minor frequenza, sui pioppi. In Umbria , si può incontrare, sporadicamente, lungo i torrenti e i fossi ricchi di vegetazione ripariale, come in Val Nerina, o in montagna, sopra i 1000 metri, dove gli individui appena sfarfallati tendono ad emigrare. La foto, è stata scattata nel lontano 3 Agosto 2010 alle 10 del mattino, nei pressi del Pian Grande di Castelluccio di Norcia( che si indovina nella foto), sui Monti Sibillini, con una vecchia Nikon Coolpix S210V, in uno dei rari incontri che ho avuto con questa specie...
