Nel quartiere di Testaccio a Roma, circondato dalle Mura Aureliane, si trova il Cimitero acattolico di Roma. Le regole della Chiesa cattolica vietavano di seppellire in terra consacrata i non cattolici come ad esempio i protestanti, ebrei, ortodossi e anche suicidi ed attori. Queste persone dopo la morte erano rifiutate dalla comunità cattolica cittadina ed erano seppellite fuori dalle mura della città, o al margine estremo di queste. In questo piccolo e affascinante cimitero riposano, tra l'altro, molti attori e poeti e personaggi italiani e stranieri: John Keats, Percy B. Shelley, Irene Galitzine, Bruno Pontecorvo, Dario Bellezza, Carlo Emilio Gadda, Antonio Gramsci, solo per citarne alcuni. Una delle tombe più belle, a mio avviso, è quella di William Wetmore Story (1819-1895), il più importante scultore americano a Roma per quarant'anni. Il monumento funebre è in memoria della sua amata moglie Emelyn: la statua dell'angelo inginocchiato davanti al piedistallo con il volto coperto che trasmette un'incredibile sensazione di tristezza e di vuoto fu realizzato dal marito che morì poco dopo aver terminato l'opera.
