Da qualche anno, in Italia, sono due le specie di Zerynthia annoverate nella Check list dei nostri Lepidotteri : La Zerynthia cassandra, del tutto uguale alla Z. polyxena come aspetto esterno, è diversa geneticamente e per la morfologia dei genitali. Specie endemica della Penisola, vola a sud del Po in tutte le regioni centro meridionali in Sicilia e all'Elba. Molto più comune di quanto si creda, vola per poco tempo, in genere da metà Aprile alla prima decade di Maggio, ed è strettamente legata alla sua pianta nutrice, l'Aristolochia, dalla quale non si allontana.. Le popolazioni appenniniche che volano sopra i 1000 metri, possono protrarsi per tutto Giugno
