Apatura ilia è una bella specie, diffusa in gran parte del territorio italiano, fino alla Campania. In Umbria è relativamente comune, ma poco visibile ai più, per via delle abitudini generalmente elusive, passando buona parte della giornata fra le fronde degli alberi. I maschi hanno la caratteristica di presentare un'iridescenza diffusa color azzurro-violetto, che varia in base a come la luce si riflette sulle scaglie alari, un fenomeno fisico, non frequente fra i lepidotteri. Si conoscono due forme di questa farfalla: una è la forma clytie che presenta delle lunule arancio sul bordo interno delle ali ed è la forma più comune in Italia. Specie bivoltina, compare a giugno, per poi riapparire ad agosto con la seconda generazione
