Calopteryx virgo (Linnaeus, 1758) Dimensioni: 45-50 mm, apertura alare 48-72 mm. Descrizione della specie: il maschio è di colore blu con riflessi metallici verdi. Gli ultimi segmenti addominali, ventralmente, sono rosa chiaro. Si distingue dai maschi congeneri per le ali più larghe, arrotondate e quasi completamente blu-violacee. Le femmine, di colore verde metallico, hanno ali soffuse di bruno con pseudopterostigma biancastro, meno trasparenti rispetto alle femmine di Calpteryx splendens, e pseudopterostigma bianco. Le larve vivono esclusivamente in acque correnti, con una netta preferenza per quelle boschive di ridotte dimensioni, fresche o fredde, ombrose e ben ossigenate Distribuzione e habitat: C. virgo è una specie europea con i limiti della sua distribuzione nel nord della Finlandia e nel sud dell'Italia continentale. In Italia la specie è comune sopratutto nelle zone di bassa montagna, fino a 800 m di quota. E' conosciuta di tutte le regioni con l'eccezione di Sardegna e Puglia. Per la Sicilia esistono solo antiche segnalazioni. Frequenta aree boschive, rogge, fontanili, ambienti freschi ed ombreggiati con acque correnti, pulite e ben ossigenate.
