Il progetto è dell?architetto ferrarese Antonio Foschini (1741 - 1813); la facciata posteriore, meno solenne, è di Gaetano Genta (1750 - 1837), l'architetto che sostituì Foschini nella direzione dei lavori e nel completamento dell'edificio. Inaugurato nel 1814, ha concluso la propria attività nel 1976.
