L'Abetone è situato nell'alta Montagna pistoiese, nell'alta valle del Sestaione ad un'altitudine di 1388 m s.l.m., presso il confine con l'Emilia-Romagna e sorge presso l'omonimo valico appenninico. È, per casa comunale, il comune più alto della regione. Alle spalle si trova l'Alpe Tre Potenze, tra le cime più elevate della regione (1940 m), e vette minori come il Monte Gomito (1892 m) e la Selletta (1711 m), mentre di fronte si erge il maestoso Libro Aperto (1937 m).
