siamo nella Cappella antistante l'ingresso interno della Real Chiesa di San Lorenzo in Piazza Castello. Emanuele Filiberto I del Ducato di Savoia e suo cugino Filippo II di Spagna vinsero la celebre battaglia di San Quintino in Francia, il 10 agosto 1557, giorno di San Lorenzo, battaglia che diede un forte contributo alla fine del ciclo storico delle Guerre d'Italia del XVI secolo, soprattutto tra gli Asburgo e la Francia, e vinto dai Savoia grazie all'ausilio degli spagnoli. Entrambi i duchi promisero, in caso di vittoria, la costruzione di una chiesa dedicata al celebre santo. Filippo II di Spagna fece costruire un monastero a forma di graticola, per ricordare il supplizio inflitto a Lorenzo martire, presso Escorial, a circa 50 km da Madrid. Il duca sabaudo invece, prima di rientrare gloriosamente a Torino, dovette attendere il trattato di pace di Cateau-Cambrésis, con la restituzione dei territori sabaudo da parte del re spagnolo. Soltanto nel 1562 "Testa di Ferro" (il soprannome di Emanuele Filiberto I di Savoia) fece ristrutturare una chiesetta già presente, ovvero l'antica cappella ducale di Santa Maria ad Presepae, già Madonna della Neve, dedicandola a San Lorenzo, ancor oggi presente all'ingresso. In passato infatti, l'ingresso era soltanto laterale, da via Palazzo di Città. Nel 1572 fu qui costituita, dallo stesso Emanuele Filiberto, la sede torinese dell'Ordine cavalleresco dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro. Con l'arrivo poi della Sacra Sindone a Torino nel 1578, e la relativa prima ostensione, proprio in questa Cappella d'ingresso, l'arcivescovo milanese Carlo Borromeo celebrò qui una messa solenne, proprio nella parte settentrionale della stessa. A questa celebrazione partecipò anche Torquato Tasso, all'epoca poeta di corte, in visita a Torino, e per la quale dedicò una poesia. In ricordo, fu eretto altresì un altare, sopraelevato di dodici gradini, che la tradizione vuole vadano percorsi in ginocchio, opera di Bernardo Vittone del 1726. In cima fu successivamente posta una copia fotografica del Sacro Lino, in scala 1/2. Tutta la Cappella d'ingresso fu poi dedicata alla Addolorata. Nel 1846 vi fu un'altra ristrutturazione della stessa, da parte di Alfonso Dupuy, dove sopra l'altare fu inserito, nel 1870, un gruppo ligneo del Cristo morto ai piedi della Madonna, opera dello scultore Giovanni Tamone.
