The last collection was...a long time ago!! My Juza friend Ann has given herself a new Sigma macro lens for Christmas and in our 'chats' I was saying about the versatility of such a lens and that I should use my same model more. So, this morning, dull and windy, I went for a 6 km Boxing Day walk in nearby village of Britford. I took only this lens and looked for subjects - good around the ancient and tumbledown churchyard but I just HAD to focus in on this old post box, set in a wall. 'GR' means it's from the 1930's (King George). I just loved the flaky paint and the earwig! |

Great to see you set yourself the same challenge as you set me, Tim! I shall aim to do the same sometime next week when things quieten down and I can indulge in more time getting to know my new lens! This is a fabulous shot of the ancient postbox - what a find! You have captured some wonderful detail! |

I think this was a great idea Tim, the detail is superb and the colors both rich and contrasty(which is apparently not a real word) Brian |

The Italian for earwig must be very well worth knowing, Frances - cheers - indeed, many think that a macro is only for close ups but for me, having a decent f2.8 medium telephoto with stabilisation can be very useful indeed. Happy New Year to you too! |

Well, with no sunshine (IT did try to appear but was soon blown back away again!) the challenge was quite easy to undertake, Ann. As I said, it made me look closer, there were a few daffodils out, signs of cherry blossom, I saw a green woodpecker fly over an orchard, an elderly couple walking their dogs told me to look out for Red Kites! I did go in much closer on this box and you may have noticed how the sides of this box are completely flat and straight - a zoom lens this close up would have produced quite strong distortion, which would have lessened the quality of the shot. I'm sure you can see yourself pictures within the picture just of the detail alone! The quality of the lens at f2.8 made the churchyard shots look much better than the weather suggested, due to very good contrast levels, they really did 'pop' with 3D, despite it being dull as dull. |

Brian - again, thank you and indeed, contrasty doesn't seem to be a proper word, though on Juza, no red wavy line appears underneath, but usually it does. And yes, it is good to set oneself a challenge, I often do it, with say, a 50mm f1.4, adding DOF creativities to the repertoire. |

Thank you Vittorio - I cannot really comment on the Canon, except that they are plentiful and very popular, you know what you are getting. For me, the Nikon VR was just too expensive and so the Sigma, which has come down in price (now about 45% less than the Nikon) was my only real optically stabilised option. It's certainly a well built (metal) unit that is a joy to use. I could have gone with Tamron 90mm VC, but wanted the extra mm's, as I already have the Nikon G 85mm f1.8 'normal' telephoto. |

This lens could be used for several porpouse. It's great. 8-) I'm curious ... Which are the "safety Reasons"? :-P

Indeed, many thanks Lorenzo! The safety reason is, obvious - the huge earwig that could eat up the postman!! (actually, the wall it's set in is on a blind bend and you have to listen for any cars coming, despite the road being quiet and only carrying local traffic. It would mean use of a tripod to take further photos more than a little risky.) |
