I'd love to know how you're finding your new lens, when you've used it more of course and when you can find the time!

I've not used it much yet but I'm enjoying it, although not finding it all that easy. Auto focus seems to 'hunt' a lot, so I'm trying manual, which I've only used occasionally in the past.

The macro world very seldom has an obvious or flat plane to focus on and so AF will pick up on anything, or nothing, depending on the subject. (it will always latch onto the biggest/nearest high contrast part - AF systems work on contrast phase detection))

At large magnifications, it is often dark in the viewfinder too. With depth of field (DOF) so shallow, even stopped down, focus needs to be absolutely precise. In the older days - and even now - a technique used is to simply move the camera (or yourself) back and fore, as it is quicker! Also, these dark days, you are not shooting bright flowers outdoors in sunshine, which would be a whole lot easier.

Also, Ann, I do hope that you will explore the possibilities that this lens offers as a normal, quite fast, short telephoto lens. Compared to the apprx f5 max aperture at this setting that your 18-300 would offer, this 105mm will be great for limited depth of field shots and of course, portraits and people and street photography, as well as making you look harder for subjects that fit that focal length, not the other way around.

I sincerely believe that all photographers need to and should do this, occasionally, to brush off those complacency cobwebs that we can all get. Doesn't matter if the photos aren't that good, the task itself will have helped you. The image quality should also knock spots off the mega zoom, if used correctly, of course.

Here are those I've posted on Juza taken with this lens that you have not liked : (and I guess therefore not seen)

www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?l=en&t=1050279 (as a landscape lens)

www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?l=en&t=1406931 (as a portrait lens)

www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?l=en&t=1426754 (for detail/texture)

www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?l=en&t=1368473 (in church lens)

www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?l=en&t=1444161 (in the rain! lens)

www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?l=en&t=1377326 (bugs in diner lens)

www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?l=en&t=1377326 (impressionist lens)

www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?l=en&t=1051634 (urban pattern lens, possibly my favourite and shows what an unpromising day in Bournemouth centre can provide, emulating nature)

www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?l=en&t=1342187 (arty b&w fern lens)

www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?l=en&t=1312948 (raindrops lens)

www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?l=en&t=1369506 (almost in the dark church painting lens)

www.juzaphoto.com/galleria.php?l=en&t=1393840 (golden barley lens)

Finally - sleazy five a.m. Castle Cameras Salisbury street shot, showing night-time potential. Unfortunately manager Jim didn't quite see its inner beauty and didn't want to use it in any advertising!

Sorry that there are so many more than I thought, Ann and that you will find the time to look at them. It took me over an hour looking through all posted under this lens to find them and to see what other images others had posted. (Yours is in there!) Hopefully you will 'like' some of them too! Do check the apertures/shutter speeds that will reveal what it can produce under differing conditions.

I do feel that I haven't yet fully utilised this lens yet, but as these subjects show, it has many uses and I look forward to using it a bit more - especially if we get some ice and snow!
