A circa 30 minuti di navigazione da Puno, sul lago Titicaca, si trovano le isole galleggianti (in spagnolo, Islas Flotantes) degli Uros costruite con le canne di Totora intrecciate ed ancorate sul fondo del lago. Queste particolari isole sono dette "fluttuanti" (in spagnolo, Islas Flotantes) in quanto possono salire e scendere seguendo il livello del lago, ed inoltre i loro abitanti possono levare le ancore e spostarle come fossero delle chiatte. I ricercatori sostengono che il popolo degli Uros si installò su queste isole per proteggersi dalle tribù dei Collas e dagli Inca che minacciavano costantemente gli abitanti della regione. Attualmente le isole sono popolate da circa 2000 persone che vivono e dormono su queste piattaforme per tutto l'anno. Ogni isola ha una durata media di circa 30 anni e le famiglie che vi abitano vivono per lo più di pesca che praticano con le loro peculiari imbarcazioni sempre fatte di canne. Queste persone sono da sempre abituate a calpestare quella specie di terreno morbido che costituisce la loro casa tanto da aver non di rado difficoltà a camminare sulla terra ferma.
