La chiesa attuale risale al cinquecento, ma fu costruita su un edificio preesistente dedicato agli apostoli Giacomo e Filippo, nell'850 d.C. Quasi certamente la chiesa precedente era di spettanza a qualche ordine monastico, forse benedettino, a cui subentrò l'insediamento degli Agostiniani che, alla metà del XVI secolo, la riconsacrarono a Sant'Agostino e a San Giovanni Battista. La costruzione della chiesa attuale cominciò nel 1551 e procedette fino alla fine del secolo. Carlo Ceppi intervenne in maniera radicale ai primi del novecento, modificando presbiterio e coro per collocarvi l'ampio altare in stile eclettico sormontato da volta ellittica affrescata dallo Stura. L'impianto della chiesa è basilicale a tre navate, priva di transetto, e con doppia abside quadra. Il campanile, a base quadrata, in cotto, di forme eleganti, risale al XV secolo. La facciata, con ampio portale preceduto da scalinata, e scansione ritmata da paraste corinzie, è propria del tardo Rinascimento.
