Salisbury Cathedral - Night

, 1/50 f/8.0, ISO 320, tripod. Salisbury, United Kingdom.

Early morning. Superwide 14mm on FX (DX eqv 9mm), so no graduated grey filters can be attached to the front. There was some sunrise colour in that big sky, so to give that a boost, I set the white balance to 'cloudy' - which set off a rather violent dark red hue over everything. Thinking that would only affect the jpeg and not the main RAW used for editing, well I was wrong! So, in PS5, actually decreased the reds quite a lot, added much extra contrast to the clouds and spent some time extracting LOTS of shadow detail in the cathedral, which was totally dark in the original. Unfortunately, the yellow tungsten bulb used in the lamp has been replaced by an EU approved energy saving LED, which only gives out white light. So, that HAD to be turned back to warm tungsten! Other than all that, it's a quite straightforward shot! #Cathedrals

Early morning.

Thinking that would only affect the jpeg and not the main RAW used for editing, well I was wrong! (I don't use this old battered camera much, any more) So, in PS5, actually decreased the reds quite a lot, added much extra contrast to the clouds and spent some time extracting LOTS of shadow detail in the cathedral, which was totally dark in the original. Unfortunately, the yellow tungsten bulb used in the lamp has now been replaced by an EU approved energy saving LED, which only gives out white light. So, that HAD to be turned back to warm tungsten! Other than all that, it's a quite straightforward shot! (I did also add some vignetting)

TimK, a beautiful picture, I like the PDR, as I like the design, perhaps it is absurd to say it, but maybe I would find a perspective that encompassed the whole cathedral, only exchange of views, not critical 8-) ;-)
A greeting
Vittorio 8-) ;-)

Thank you Vittorio. With such a wide lens, moving back and fore a few cms make a lot of difference and if I moved back, the lamp would be much smaller in the frame. I also wanted a clear gap between the lamp and the left of the cathedral. I took many, and tried what you suggested and the steep angle of the building echoes that of the lamp.

TimK ok, I had no doubt that I had tried many perspectives, in fact I declared absurd to say 8-) 8-): -D
But sometimes, exchange a few words does not hurt, do not you think 8-) 8-)
A greeting
Vittorio 8-) ;-)

I think the lamp makes the shot. I especially like that the angle of the lamp is the same as the cathedral's left side. Great shot Tim. SorrisoSorriso

I agree with you Jypka! That the cathedral's spire is 123 metres tall and the lamp is only 4m tall, yet looks bigger, shows the importance of angle, and framing!

I hope you enjoyed your birthday yesterday? And the sauna and beers too!
