Questa chiesa torinese, detta anche Chiesa di San Francesco ad turrim in quanto prossima alla torre civica, deve la sua nascita allo stabilirsi della comunità francescana in città a partire dal 1214, anno del presunto passaggio a Torino di San Francesco d'Assisi. La chiesa occupa da sempre una posizione "strategica" nel contesto cittadino; essendo situata in pieno centro storico nel quartiere un tempo detto di Porta Marmorea (come attesta il catasto del 1415) nelle vicinanze della dinamica "Contrada di Dora Grossa" (attuale Via Garibaldi) e del Palazzo del Comune, ha sempre rivestito un ruolo attivo nella città. In essa si svolsero riunioni dei Savi del Consiglio dal XIII secolo e trovarono collocazione cappelle patrocinate da ricche corporazioni di mestiere o da nobili famiglie, le quali per molti anni agevolarono con importanti donazioni la vita della chiesa. La notorietà della chiesa perdurò grazie al ricchissimo "corredo di reliquie" dei santi più rappresentativi e nel corso dell'800 grazie alla fama ed alla devozione popolare di santi ottocenteschi che presso questo edificio più o meno a lungo operarono: San Giovanni Bosco e San Giuseppe Cafasso, rettore della Chiesa e confessore di Don Bosco. Le attuali visite guidate alla chiesa pongono in risalto episodi sia artistici che architettonici legati alle figure di questi due santi: il confessionale di S. Cafasso dove si confessava Don Bosco, l'altare dell'Angelo Custode dove Don Bosco celebrò la prima messa nel 1841, la sacrestia dove Don Bosco incontrò Bartolomeo Garelli, primo ragazzo del suo Oratorio, ed il cortile dell'Oratorio.
