Nella bellissima Piazza San Carlo, sul lato sud, la splendida cornice delle due chiese gemelle fa da ingresso all' ultimo tratto di via Roma verso Porta Nuova; la struttura sulla destra è la Chiesa di Santa Cristina voluta dalla Reggente Maria Cristina di Francia, prima Madama reale, per ricordare il figlioletto appena deceduto a soli cinque anni. La Duchessa acquistò i terreni nel 1639 ed affidò il progetto a Carlo di Castellamonte e successivamente, dopo la scomparsa di questi, al figlio Amedeo. I lavori di costruzione si interruppero dopo la morte del progettista e furono ripresi dall'architetto di casa Savoia, Filippo Juvarra, per volere di Vittorio Amedeo II di Savoia tra il 1715 ed il 1718; la Chiesa di Santa Cristina è considerata la prima opera dell'architetto siciliano a Torino. La chiesa di Santa Cristina è a navata unica, la spettacolare volta fu affrescata dai pittori svizzeri Giacomo e Giovanni Andrea Casella, al fianco dell'altare maggiore una cappella ospita il dipinto di Antonio Triva "Riposo dalla fuga in Egitto", e degno di nota è l'altare maggiore ad opera di Ferdinando Bonsignore. Sempre per volere di Maria Cristina di Francia, con la costruzione della chiesa fu eretto il monastero delle suore Carmelitane Scalze a cui la reggente era molto legata e dove la stessa fu sepolta vestita da carmelitana scalza. Nel 1802 il convento fu soppresso e la chiesa fu trasformata in Borsa di Commercio per poi essere nuovamente consacrata e destinata a luogo di culto, per volere di Vittorio Emanuele I di Savoia, pochi anni dopo. Il convento fu definitivamente abbattuto nei primi anni del novecento durante i lavori di rifacimento di via Roma. Nel XIX secolo la chiesa veniva chiamata "la chiesa delle serve" poiché la messa che si teneva ogni domenica pomeriggio era frequentata soprattutto dalle persone di servizio dei palazzi signorili circostanti che avevano la mezza giornata di libertà proprio nel pomeriggio della domenica.
