Come molti sanno, la Basilica di Superga nacque da un voto alla Madonna fatto dall'allora Duca Vittorio Amedeo II. All'inizio del settembre del 1706, il Duca si trovò a fronteggiare, con il cugino Principe Eugenio, le truppe francesi che cingevano d'assedio la sua capitale: l'epigrafe murata nella parete della Basilica lo ricorda così, inginocchiato di fronte all'effige scolpita della Madonna a suggellare la promessa dell'edificazione di un Tempio dedicato al culto della Vergine, in caso di vittoria. La statua della Madonna, conservata nella Cappella del Voto interna alla Basilica, si trovava custodita entro la nicchia di un modesto tempietto sacro intitolato a Santa Maria Sub Pergolam in ragione del pergolato che ne ombreggiava la facciata: secondo alcuni storici, il nome Superga deriverebbe proprio da questa collocazione. Un'altra ipotesi, meno poetica, farebbe invece risalire il nome della chiesa alla radice celtico-germanica di Serra-Perg che significa altura. Che la promessa votiva sia stata contratta di fronte a questo semplice tempio o piuttosto presso un convento di Bibiana (TO), come suggeriva una lapide andata distrutta, è un fatto lungi dall'essere storicamente accertato, ma il legame affettivo che sempre congiunse Casa Savoia alla Basilica sorta ad esito degli sviluppi positivi della battaglia è sicuramente prova inconfutabile dell'avvenuto adempimento del voto da parte del Duca.
