I'm glad that you stated the usage of the extension tube! It explains how you got this lens nicely close and the study of the orchid has a beautiful, soft background. It might be less convenient, but this combo will always be better than your 18-300mm at closest focus and then cropped. |

Thanks, Tim. I bought a set of extension tubes fairly recently as a stop gap until I invest in a macro lens but have only just found out how to use them (I didn't realise I had to get quite so close to the subject, so was finding focussing impossible), so still have lots of fun experimenting ahead of me! |

Yes, I know you said that you'd bought them. You still have to get close with a macro lens at high ratios, but a 105mm would allow three times the distance than this combo (35mm x 3 = 105mm). All an extension tube does is increase the focussing distance (newer zooms have internal focus and don't extend in length during focussing, so you don't see this happening). Actually, true macro lenses for amateur/enthusiast use is quite a recent thing, in days of old (ie film) the standard 50mm f1.8 lens would get used with extension tube/s, for those adventurous enough to try. Modern digital helps with the number of frames wasted (lots!) and allows high iso's needed for macro (an f2.8 macro becomes an f5.6 at maximum aperture at closest focus, due to the light loss entirely due to how much further the light has to travel down the lens barrel and then onto the sensor. |
