The shadows of the Needles have been cast onto the white chalk cliff face by the low late sun. Shot from Bournemouth (20km away?) late this afternoon with 70-300mm at 300mm plus 1.4 x TC eqv focal length =560mm |

That's amazing that you were able to capture this at such a distance, Tim! The low sun on the Needles is lovely! |

Pulling in an extra 40% focal length by using the teleconverter really made this possible, Ann. Very little cropping either! |

Teleconverters are on my 'find out about' list but maybe not yet - I have plenty to get my head round for the moment! |

As I'm sure I've said, they're usually a big waste of time and money, only used with (very) fast pro fixed telephotos, such as a 300mm f2.8, or a zoom such as pro 70-200mm f2.8, on occasion a fluke marriage of a particular converter and extended zoom can work, as here. Only works in good (and contrasty) light and needs stopping the lens down but this Sigma Apo one I have is the size of a short extension tube (but much heavier) so always gets taken with the 70-300mm of mine. I would seriously doubt the quality with a mega 18-300mm zoom though. My Tamron is known to be about the best 70-300mm made, at any price and this obviously helps. This converter won't fit Nikon lenses either, due to the rear flange of the lens being too far back. And it costs over £100 secondhand, so not a cheap bargain. |
