Ahu Tongariki e' il sito archeologico che vanta il maggior numero di moai sull'isola, ben 15! Qui si trova, quinto da destra, il moai piu' grande dell'isola, con un'altezza di 9 metri ed un peso di 86 tonnellate. La maestosita' dell'ahu e' dovuta al fatto che si trova a solo un chilometro dal posto dove i moai venivano scolpiti e cioe' il vulcano Rano Raraku. Il sito e' stato restaurato all'inizio degli anni 90 grazie ad una donazione in soldi e mezzi, dal governo giapponese. Prima del restauro i moai erano rovesciati a terra e sospiniti lontano dalla piattaforma originale sulla quale sono, a causa dello tzunami occorso sull'isola nel 1960. Un grazie quindi al popolo giapponese.
