Nel 1596, sir Harlington ideò un marchingegno fornito di una torre-serbatoio d'acqua. Un rubinetto a mano faceva affluire l'acqua in un serbatoio più piccolo, mentre una botola a valvola faceva defluire l'acqua di scolo in un pozzo nero. Seppur rudimentale, il progetto destò un certo interesse, ma il nobile inventore ebbe la brutta idea di parlarne in un libro, lasciandosi andare pesanti allusioni. Il cattivo gusto non piacque alla regina Elisabetta che bocciò il progetto e non volle più saperne dell'ingegnoso figlioccio. Soltanto un secolo e mezzo dopo circa, nel 1775, il water closet vide la luce, per merito di Alexander Cummings che lo perfezionò con l'uso del sifone"
