Corpo appiattito, largo nella parte anteriore e affusolato in quella posteriore. La testa ha forma triangolare con la mascella inferiore più sviluppata per cui la bocca appare leggermente rivolta verso l'alto. Sopra la testa vi sono costolature ossee con robuste spine. Gli occhi sporgenti, con la pupilla parzialmente ricoperta da una palpebra frastagliata; assomigliando ad un coccodrillo, da qui il suo nome.
