Nel corso di secoli i veneziani hanno progressivamente sostituito la terra battuta e i mattoni a spina di pesce con una pavimentazione stradale in "masegni" di trachite euganea. Il masegno è un blocco di pietra spianato nella faccia superiore e rozzamente sbozzato a semisfera in quella inferiore. La trachite euganea è pietra ottimale per pavimentare, sia per le sue doti estetiche sia per quelle di efficienza: resistente all'usura, all'imbibimento e soprattutto alla salsedine, alta valenza anti sdrucciolio. La cava delle pietre da quelle località (colli Euganei) è oggi drasticamente limitata e in via di totale proibizione. La trachite euganea diviene quindi da pietra di pregio una pietra assai rara. In concomitanza con la chiusura delle cave euganee iniziano massicce sparizioni di pavimentazione pubblica a Venezia. In occasione di ogni lavoro pubblico sono molte le pietre originali che vengono sostituite con piastrelloni di dubbia natura e di evidente pessima qualità. (fonte www.Venicexplorer.net)
