Dal piumaggio bruno dorato, la Sgarza ciuffetto rappresenta una delle specie più eleganti della famiglia degli aironi. Tipico è appunto il ciuffo, piuttosto somigliante a una cresta, che campeggia sul capo dando alla specie un aspetto saggio, quasi si trattasse di lunghi capelli bianchi. Evidente anche il becco, bluastro e nero sulla punta, mentre la coda e il ventre presentano sfumature più chiare, sempre sulle tonalità del bruno-dorato e del rossiccio.
