Dall'alto della collina di Superga, il piazzale della Basilica offre una vista spettacolare su tutta la città. La Basilica lega il suo nome a Vittorio Amedeo II di Savoia che nel 1706 da questo piazzale vide Torino assediata dall'esercito franco-spagnolo e in quell'occasione promise alla Madonna che se avesse liberato la città dallo straniero, avrebbe fatto costruire in quel luogo una Basilica in Suo onore. I torinesi riuscirono a respingere l'assalto dei nemici e il re adempì il voto. A prima vista, fin dall'esterno, è impossibile non notare il marcato stile tardo barocco della Cupola Juvarriana della Basilica di Superga, la cui ricchezza di decorazioni sfuma gradualmente nella sobrietà, seppur sontuosa, del pronao e del colonnato, eretti in stile neoclassico. Per la cronaca, la costruzione fu terminata nel 1731.
