Riviera del Conero Chiesa di Santa Maria di Portonovo Fonte Wikipedia: La Chiesa di Santa Maria è un capolavoro dell'architettura romanica non solo marchigiano, ma per l'intero romanico italiano. Fu costruita, a partire dal 1034, dai Benedettini, forse di provenienza franco-normanna. Sorge su un piccolo rialzo roccioso che si protende nel mare ed è lambita dal verde della macchia mediterranea. Presenta esternamente elementi dello stile romanico lombardo (lesene, archetti pensili); la struttura architettonica è suggestiva e singolarissima, fusione di una pianta a croce greca, una basilicale e di una "chiesa a cappelle parallele". Le mura esterne sono in pietra bianca del Conero, mentre il pavimento interno, rimasto - cosa singolarissima - quello originale, è costituito da un disegno geometrico realizzato con pietre color ocra e con elementi in cotto. L'edificio è aperto da serrate monofore, che nel particolare tiburio celante una cupola ellittica, di taglio bizantino, diventano bifore. Sull'altare è presente dal 1938 un'icona di Gregorio Maltzeff, del tipo "Madonna di Vladimir", detta anche "Madre di Dio della tenerezza".
