Il corpo snello, di colore grigio, con macchie bianche sulla prima pinna caudale e dorsale. E' un pesci predatore, con un senso dell'olfatto molto sviluppato e la capacità di percepire le vibrazioni dell'acqua a distanze notevoli. La bocca contiene molte file di denti appuntiti che quando si consumano vengono sostituiti. Si nutre essenzialmente di animali che vivono sul fondo e sul reef. Vive vicino alla costa a profondità che vanno dagli 2 ai 40 metri. Sono attivi durante la notte e sono abituati al rumore delle barche e indifferenti alla presenza dei subacquei. Non sono aggressivi sempre che vengano disturbati oppure alimentati. È una specie vivipara e le femmine partoriscono da 1 a 5 piccoli che alla nascita misurano circa 50 cm. Può raggiungere i 2.5m di lunghezza.
