Le notizie relative all'antica pieve di San Lorenzo sono molto scarse, ma è verosimile ritenere che già nel 1309, sul sito ove ora si trova la Collegiata, vi sorgesse già l'antica chiesa. Nel 1611 accadde per Giaveno un fatto di straordinaria importanza: la traslazione da Roma delle reliquie del Santo Papa Antero, qual dono di frà Giovanni Battista Cavagno di Novara al giavenese don Vincenzo Claretta. Questo eccezionale avvenimento si lega cronologicamente in modo assai stretto alla decisione di ricostruire San Lorenzo. I lavori di riedificazione ebbero immediato avvio e nel 1622, su richiesta del cardinal Maurizio di Savoia, papa Gregorio XV ratificò la richiesta cardinalizia di nominare la chiesa Collegiata. L'odierna parrocchiale è in buona parte frutto di rifacimenti avvenuti tra fine Ottocento ed inizio Novecento. L'originaria chiesa seicentesca era collocata al di fuori della cinta muraria della città; nel 1622 il cardinal Maurizio, divenuto da tempo "signore" di Giaveno, fondò in San Lorenzo la Collegiata dei Canonici con l'approvazione di Papa Gregorio XV e solo allora la chiesa venne consacrata dal vescovo di Asti. La nuova parrocchiale era più ampia della precedente, con tre navate e sei cappelle laterali per ciascuna navata. L'altare maggiore apparteneva alla comunità e vi era stata retta la Compagnia del Corpus Domini. Nella cappella di sinistra, dedicata dal comune a Sant'Antero erano collocate le reliquie del Santo. La Collegiata vanta la presenza di un pregevolissimo dipinto raffigurante San Lorenzo firmato e datato Joseph Ouvertus 1725. La pala è posta sopra gli stalli del coro a guisa di pala d'altare e rappresenta San Lorenzo inginocchiato davanti alla Madonna con il Bambino, affiancata da San Michele Arcangelo, circondata da angeli sopra una cornice di nuvole.
