La torre della televisione fu costruita tra il 1965 e il 1969[1] nella zona est della città di Berlino. La storia della torre è parte della storia tedesca e la sua realizzazione fu un capolavoro politico e tecnico della Germania Orientale. Negli anni sessanta il governo della DDR aveva deciso di costruire la torre della televisione anche per il motivo, non meno importante di quello tecnico, di dimostrare la forza e l'efficienza del sistema socialista, un simbolo architettonico della nuova Berlino capitale della "nuova Germania democratica". Anche oggi la torre è un elemento caratterizzante dello skyline della capitale tedesca, visibile da tutti i distretti centrali di Berlino, e costituisce un punto di riferimento per l'intera Germania. La torre, alta 368 metri, fu eretta con il preciso scopo di farne la più alta torre televisiva d'Europa, seconda solo a quella di Mosca. All'altezza di 207 metri la torre ospita un ristorante panoramico che ruota di 360° ogni mezz'ora.
